Don’t neglect the soft side of Data Science

When talking about the soft side of data science, there’s a story that’s often left untold.

You may think that you don’t need to hear this story because you have plenty of technology experts. You know, the programmers, the database specialists, the Microsofts of this world and so on.

But there is a soft side to this equation. Your data science strategy is not going to work if you do not have the right people to translate your business needs into technology.

We all know that, but it can be difficult to put this ethos into practice. Companies regularly scope out their projects and technical issues using road maps and visions of how future technologies need to look. But this approach is not a guaranteed recipe for success. You have to have a good mix of tech and business people, including operational and strategic staff.

In short, that is what we mean by the soft side of data science. You need to have a discussion to align your people with your technology. We all talk about the data-driven culture, but what does that mean? How do you give substance to that? If you only have a team of technicians, things can quickly spiral out of control. Instead, make sure that you understand and prioritize this soft side from the outset. Make sure you organize accordingly. Otherwise, you may find it hard to get your data science strategy right.
